Lynn Ray pole vaulting for Chandler High School

Lynn Ray was a standout track and field athlete and football player at Chandler High School (class of 1961).  He played at the running back position on the football team, earning all conference honors in 1960 as a senior.  While he had great success on the football field, he excelled at pole vault.  He set a school record of 13'2" as a junior, and broke his own record with a vault of 13'3" the following year.  His record stood until his brother Mario broke the record with a vault of 14'.  Lynn attended Northern State Teachers College in Aberdeen, SD.  He participated in both football and pole vault in college.  As a freshman running back and kicker he led the conference in scoring, recording 28 points in his first game.  During training for pole vault in the spring he injured his knee.  While he competed in the season, the injury kept him from competing at Nationals, and he had surgery after the season.  He returned to college in 1963 and played football before injuries ended his college career.  He played one season of semi-pro football for the Charlotte team of the Southern Football League.  Lynn was inducted into the Chandler Sports Hall of Fame on February 9, 2013.
