    2 cups sifted flour

    1 1/3 cups sugar

    1 1/4 tsp. baking powder

    3/4 tsp. soda

    1 tsp. salt

    1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon

    1/8 tsp. cloves

    3/4 tsp. nutmet

    1/2 cup shortening

    3/4 cup buttermilk or thick sour milk

    1 tsp. vanilla

    2 eggs, unbeaten

    Sift flour, sugar, baking powder, soda, salt and spices in mixing bowl.  Mix thoroughly by hand.  Add shortening, buttermilk and then vanilla and beat in mixer two minutes on low speed.  Add eggs and beat two minutes more.  Bake in 10x10x2 inch pan at 375 degrees for 35 to 40 minutes.

    Meanwhile, make a meringue topping by beating two egg whites until they hold a stiff peak.  Beat gradually into egg whites 1 cup sifted brown sugar.  Spread meringue on warm cake and sprinkle with 1/2 cup chopped nuts.  Return to oven to bake 10-15 minutes to brown meringue.
