    At the McCroskey House, students explore a 1917 kit home ordered from a catalogue!  They make comparisons between the historic house and their home today and learn about the chores that kids did around the house.  Students even perform one of the chores: butter making!  After observing the science behind butter churning, the students get to taste their hard work.

    Butter Recipe

    Ingredients/Materials

    Heavy Whipping Cream

    Small jar or container with airtight lid

    Utensil for spreading

    Directions

    1. Let cream sit out of refrigerator for 20-30 minutes. 

    2. Pour cream into small container with an airtight lid, filling about half-way. 

    3. Shake container for 5-10 minutes, or until cream solidifies.  You will have a thin liquid at the bottom of the jar that will not solidify with the rest of the butter.  This liquid is buttermilk and can be used separately.

    4. Using utensil, spread butter onto food and enjoy.

    Optional: Add chopped fresh herbs (basil, thyme, sage) to cream for flavored butter.

    Optional: Use cheesecloth to strain butter from buttermilk.
